Where we stand with drought

Fortunately as I sit here and type this, a lot of the region is in pretty good shape. However, as you can see below there are some areas that are still struggling with dryness and drought.

The past several weeks have been the most kind to eastern areas. The map below shows the rainfall anomaly for the past 90 days.

Southwest Texas, Southeast New Mexico and large parts of Oklahoma and Kansas have really struggled. This is pretty atypical of what an El Niño has to offer. And with El Niño having departed, those west/southwest areas are likely going to be in the most trouble. That being said, I am more optimistic about the dryness getting erased for areas farther north, across eastern Oklahoma, eastern Kansas, and northward into the Missouri Valley. Here is what the EURO and NMME models are saying for the next three months.

Temperatures are likely going to be warmer than average too. Here is a look at what both models are saying.

Hopefully, we can shove as much water in the ground as possible before things turn drier for everyone. Per what I’ve been saying for months, La Niña is coming quickly and that rarely ever bodes well for the southern region.
