Just Your Standard Bull

The month of March is for me all about Springtime, baby calves and March Madness! Drive down just about any Texas highway and you will see fresh baby calves running and romping about. What you don’t see so far are our beloved Texas Bluebonnets. It seems as if the prolonged drought has claimed another victim.

Are they just late? We often see bluebonnets start blooming in late February here in South Texas. But from mid-March to mid-April should be the peak. Perhaps some late spring rains will revive them. I can’t remember a spring where we didn’t see them at all!

The cattle market is soaring. Replacement females and bulls are selling at all-time highs. Which makes perfect sense when you see how much calves are bringing. If a young pair is worth 2.5-3 times what a calf is worth, then that means we live in a world where commercial pairs are worth from $6,000-$7,500. And if a good young bull is worth 5 calves, then he must be worth $10,000-$12,500. But honestly, we have seen some top range bulls sell for as high as $18,000-$20,000 just in the past 2 weeks. So it would seem that there is much optimism about the future market.

On another note, I’ve got my bracket filled out and am ready for the games to begin! I don’t expect my Aggies to get too far, but I am amazed that they even made it in considering the circumstances. When you hire a new coach so late. When the majority of the players in the transfer portal are already spoken for, and you inherit a roster of one. I’d say winning 11 conference games and securing a 10 seed in March Madness, under those conditions in your first season—that’s pretty crazy.

For the record, I’m picking Duke to win it all.

Shocking right?
