Feedyard managers reported that performance of cattle finished in May was satisfactory. In some areas, closeouts still reflected poor performance due to previous winter feeding conditions.
When compared to the previous month, daily gains were improved. Feed conversions and cost of gains were reduced. In general, performance was much improved.
Steers were placed on feed at 719 lbs., finished at 1255 lbs. and gained 3.39 lbs daily for the 158 day feeding period. While cost of gain varied among yards, cost of gain averaged $73.61 per cwt.
Heifers were placed on feed with a purchased weight of 643 lbs. and marketed at 1148 lbs. Heifers gained 3.16 lbs. daily for the 160 day feeding period. Cost of gain was $76.23 per cwt.
Cost of rations for June are either comparable or lower when compared to the previous month. Rations are priced at $220 to $225 per ton on a dry basis with a markup.
Cattle feeders continue to report profits with a $94 fed cattle market. Profits range from $110 to $130 per head. One year ago, feeders reported losses of $20 to $40 per head with a $85 fed cattle market.
Recent rains have improved grazing conditions throughout the plains area. Feeder cattle are in good condition when placed in the feedyard.
Feedyard managers continued to do an excellent job in moving finished cattle from their lists. Show lists are current.
